friday night. I just got home from an exhausting but fun bonding moment with my thesismates. We handed in the revised thesis after lunch and then went to Newsbreak to get my and belleapos;s practicum evaluation forms. Itapos;s been months since we last were in the cramped office, and now that weapos;re no longer working as interns, we seemed more at ease talking to the writers, especially ms Gigi.
afterwards, the three of us hopped on the MRT to trinoma. You wonapos;t believe me when i say that itapos;s my first time in that mall, but itapos;s true. Itapos;s just too far to go to and there are many other accessible malls that i can visit. We had a late lunch at Sbarro, then tried to find something useful to do. We originally planned to watch a movie, but since the three of us canapos;t agree which one to watch and itapos;s already getting late, we decided to skip the cinema. At the end of the day, mhe and i each bought 2 books for 99 pesos. This is the first time iapos;ve bought a book of my own since March, i think.
saturday afternoon. I was late for lunch with my blockmates and they went to eastwood without me. I didnapos;t bring so much money with me and if i took a cab, i might have to sacrifice my fare money later when i go home. Luckily, nonoy offered to pay the cab for me since i was coming from katipunan. Heck, if they told me that we were going to eastwood, i wouldapos;ve gotten there quickly. We live 15 minutes away by cab. After lunch, we headed to joyceapos;s house for the overnight moviethon (which turned out to be a Supernatural-thon), but i had to leave at around 530pm.
iapos;ve been at home since then, except for the sunday mass and grocery with mama. Iapos;ve been pottering around our house for the past days, tidying up my things and throwing away every single page of reading from the semester that was. Haha. It feels purgative, saying goodbye to words penned by Immanuel Kant and Mary Racelis and Gustavo Gutierrez. I learned a lot, but theyapos;re taking up too much physical space.
iapos;m reading Philip Pullmanapos;s His Dark Materials trilogy and am now in the third book. I think itapos;s the most amazing fantasy series iapos;ve ever read. It has the most ambitious cast of creatures and characters, it has brilliant storytelling, it combines several disciplines and weaves them into an astounding tale. Thereapos;s quantum physics, theology, philosophy, chemistry, and a whole host of other things in between.
iapos;m not into fantasy novels much, so i donapos;t seek out books like these. Iapos;m more of the human drama type of reader, if you know what i mean. I first learned about the trilogy when Fr. Ben Nebres mentioned it in our Science 10 plenary in sophomore year. It sounded interesting enough, but then again, i wasnapos;t really a fantasy fan. Belle sent me a PDF e-book a year ago but i much prefer reading a real book than scrolling through pages on Adobe.
finally, i was able to borrow belleapos;s copy of the first book, The GoldenCompass, when i stayed overnight at her house for the last round of thesis revision weeks ago. I borrowed the next two books in the series from nonoy during finals week.
iapos;m on a campaign to finish the third book before leaving for ilocos on sunday. My head is a-swimming with delight and wonder. I couldnapos;t see whatapos;s going to happen next, and iapos;m in great awe of Pullmanapos;s imagination. Putting together so many branches of knowledge and twisting them to write a fantasy novel is not easy. Besides, a fantasy work requires the readerapos;s suspension of disbelief, and this one has me thinking back to what i know of the sciences and all the other things he writes about and asking myself whether they are true. thatapos;s suspension of disbelief, all right.
the series is so enjoyable iapos;m taking less and less time to finish reading each installment. The last semester was such a whirlwind of activity that i didnapos;t always have time for leisure reading. Iapos;ve decided to drown myself in books while the sembreak lasts, because i might have to cut my leisure reading again when the next semester starts. Iapos;d better go back now and find out whether they succeed in waking up the protagonist.
